The Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has Resigned

The Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has resigned from the king after tensions within his government coalition were flared up last weekend. His Bersatu party is also leaving the government.

The decision comes after Anwar Ibrahim, who was appointed successor to Mahathir, accused his allies of treason.

For example, the prime minister behind Anwar would have worked on a new government that would put Anwar offside. Both party leaders were rivals for years before they entered a coalition together in 2018.

At the age of 94, Mahathir was the oldest government leader in the world. In 2018, after a surprise election victory, he managed to form a government with the Anwar party by promising that the latter would take over the premiership after two years.

The victory came after former Prime Minister Najib Razak was accused of fraud with government money. Mahathir was also prime minister between 1981 and 2003.

It is not yet clear whether there will be new elections following the resignation of the prime minister.
