EU Still Waiting for Real Negotiations With US on Import Tariffs

A spokesperson for the European Commission reiterates that the European Union does not want import tariffs and that it is waiting for the United States to participate in negotiations on this “in a meaningful way”.

The European Commission is expected to present a response to the new American import tariffs of 20 percent next week.

On Monday, the European Commission announced that it had made a so-called zero-for-zero offer for industrial products, whereby mutual import duties would be lifted. The US rejected that.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the EU’s offer “is not enough.” For example, the president said the EU should buy more American energy. According to a spokesperson, the Commission is open to that.
