Sinovac Biotech’s Chinese corona vaccine has been declared halal by Indonesia’s highest religious council.
That means that Muslims in the country are allowed to use the vaccine without violating Islamic rules around food.
Asrorun Niam Sholeh of the Council of Ulama, the highest Islamic authority, said at a press conference that the vaccine CoronaVac is halal on Friday.
The largest Muslim country in the world wants to start vaccinating next Wednesday and has received 3 million doses of Sinovac Biotech.
In the meantime, however, the food and commodities authority of the country still has to give its approval.
According to Johns Hopkins University, the country of 275 million people has found relatively few cases of the coronavirus, 808,000. Almost 24,000 people have died from the effects of the virus.
