US Minister: Holding IS Fighters in Syria Camps Untenable

US Secretary of State raises the alarm over large-scale detention of former IS fighters in Syrian camps. Antony Blinken spoke at a meeting in Rome about an “unsustainable situation”.

He said Washington continues to call on countries to repatriate their Syrians.

The US estimates that up to 10,000 more fighters are trapped in Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) camps. That predominantly Kurdish group worked closely with the Americans during the fight against Islamic State (IS) in Syria.

The terrorist organization IS previously controlled a massive area in Syria.

That caliphate collapsed after a few years, and many former IS fighters and their families ended up in SDF camps. Many countries are reluctant to pick up their Syrians there.
