Russia and Serbia for Military Exercises to Belarus

Russian and Serbian forces will participate in joint military exercises with the Belarusian army this week.

The Russian and Serbian troops will come to Belarus from 10 to 15 September, reports the RIA news agency, without providing any further explanation.

Belarus has been in the throes of daily mass protests since President Aleksandr Lukashenko took victory in the disputed presidential election last month.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg recently called on Russia not to interfere in Belarus’s internal affairs.

“Belarus is a sovereign independent state and no one, including Russia, should interfere,” Stoltenberg said in an interview with the German newspaper Bild.

President Vladimir Putin said earlier that he has troops in reserve to assist law enforcement officials in Belarus if necessary.

According to Putin, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko had asked for this. Putin said he would only use those reserves when the situation in Belarus gets entirely out of hand at the hands of criminals or extremists.
