First Verdict Against Aung San Suu Kyi Expected on December 14

The first ruling in a lawsuit against deposed Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi is expected on December 14. The military junta has charged her with multiple offences, including violating corona rules, inciting public disorder and illegally importing walkie-talkies.

According to the AFP news agency, the ruling is about non-compliance with corona rules.

Suu Kyi was deposed by the military leadership in February after the coup and placed under house arrest. The 76-year-old winner of the Nobel Peace Prize had won the elections in Myanmar at the end of last year. But, according to the army, which lost a lot in the elections, there had been a fraud, and therefore a coup d’état was carried out.

The trial takes place completely behind closed doors before a special tribunal. The media cannot attend the hearings, and Suu Kyi’s lawyers cannot talk to journalists or foreign diplomats.

The lawyers fear a long prison sentence. An ally of Suu Kyi was previously sentenced to 20 years in prison.
