Dead and Injured by Metro Viaduct Collapse in Mexico City

A subway viaduct in Mexico City partially collapsed Monday evening (local time), and subway cars fell. At least 20 people were killed, according to local authorities.

About fifty injured people have been hospitalized.

Video images from local broadcaster Milenio TV show that the viaduct partly collapses and metro cars fall down while several cars are driving on the road below. It is still unclear what caused the accident in southeastern Mexico City.

Emergency services have removed several victims from the metro. According to the leader of the city council Claudia Sheinbaum, there is a car under the rubble. She says that among the fatalities were also minors.

Foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard writes on Twitter after the ” tragedy” that she sympathizes with the victims and the relatives. Ebrard was the head of government, a position similar to that of the mayor of Mexico City when the metro line in question was built. He also offers his help “with whatever is needed”.
