UN Security Council Examines Conflict in Ethiopia

The United Nations Security Council will meet behind closed doors on Tuesday about the conflict in Ethiopia. In that country, authorities in the Tigray region have revolted.

The Ethiopian army is in operation to get things under control.

The council’s consultations take place at the request of, among others, the three African states in the council, South Africa, Niger and Tunisia. No concrete decision is expected.

According to the UN refugee agency, 33,000 inhabitants of Tigray have now fled to neighbouring Sudan.

Armed forces in the insurgent region claimed on Tuesday that they had destroyed a mechanized division of the Ethiopian army.

It was previously stated that a helicopter and a tank belonging to the Ethiopian Armed Forces had been destroyed. There was no comment from the Ethiopian side.
