Russia Deploys New Type of Tank for the First Time in Ukraine

Russia has commissioned its new T-14 Armata main battle tanks in Ukraine. This is reported by the Russian state news agency Ria Novosti.

The Kremlin has ordered 2,300 such tanks, the first of which have now been put into service in Ukraine. For now, they are only used to target Ukrainian positions but “have not yet taken part in direct offensive operations,” said Ria Novosti.

It is unclear how many of these tanks are currently in use; according to experts, it is only a few dozen.

The T-14 has an unmanned turret, electronically controlled by the crew, located in an insulated armoured compartment at the front of the tank. In January, the British intelligence services wrote that the deployment of the tanks was “a risky decision for Russia, which would be made mainly for propaganda reasons.”
