Rumours of 16-year-old Girl Dying in Quarantine Spark Unrest in China

An outcry has sparked in China after disseminating disturbing images on social media of a dying teenage girl in a quarantine centre, where people have to stay after a positive corona test.

The video is said to have been taken at a quarantine centre in Ruzhou, Henan province, according to The Guardian. Still, the British newspaper emphasizes that the authenticity of the images has not yet been independently verified.

The recording shows the 16-year-old sick girl lying in a bunk bed with breathing problems and convulsions. A woman claiming to be the girl’s aunt claims her niece died after she developed a fever, convulsions and vomiting. She states that the victim did not receive medical attention for days, despite pleas from her family.

“I want justice”

“We tried several times to call, but our phones went unanswered,” the woman said. “I want all my family and friends to see and share this video. I want justice.”

“We must not allow this tragedy to happen again,” someone wrote on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo. “This needs to be thoroughly investigated,” said another person on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.

The approach to the coronavirus in China has recently provoked protests in various places. On the Sitong Bridge, in the northwest of the capital Beijing, banners were attached last Thursday that, among other things, called for an end to the strict corona policy.
