New York Mayor Bill de Blasio says the entire city will reopen on July 1, thanks to many vaccinations.
“We are ready to completely open up the shops, businesses, offices and theatres,” said the mayor in an interview on Thursday.
The metropolis has been struggling with lockdowns, an exodus of residents and businesses, bankruptcies and the homeless for nearly a year and a half. Due to the many infections more than a year ago, New York was the epicentre of the corona pandemic for some time.
It is assessed that at least a third of the small businesses in the metropolis will not survive the corona measures. The unemployment rate is now around 12 percent in the city, which is twice the national average.
It is not identified how many of the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who have fled the city return in the summer. As a result, the municipality has received less income and is planning tax increases.
