Italian PM Wants An Extension of the State of Emergency Due to Corona

Italy wants to extend the state of emergency due to the corona crisis until January 31. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced on Thursday that he would present the extension to parliament.

His government wants to prevent corona numbers from rising again, as in other countries in Europe.

The state of emergency was professed for six months at the end of January after the coronavirus surfaced in the country and was then extended.

The state of emergency will make money available for extraordinary measures, and regional authorities will have more powers to intervene.

For a time Italy was the European hothouse of the corona outbreak with overcrowded hospitals and mass deaths, especially in northern towns.

The country registered more than 1850 new infections in the past 24 hours, and that number is relatively stable according to Italian media.

In total, 314,861 infections have been diagnosed in Italy, and 35,894 people have died from the virus.
