Four lions in the Barcelona zoo have contracted the coronavirus. It is only the second time that big cats have tested positive for the virus.
Three females and one male were tested when workers at the Spanish zoo noticed that the animals had mild symptoms of the corona. Two employees were also found to be infected.
The animals were tested in exactly the same way as is done with humans because they are used to contact with the zoo staff.
The zoo has reached out to the Bronx Zoo in New York, where corona was found in four tigers and three lions in April.
The 16-year-old females and the 4-year-old male had mild flu symptoms and were given anti-inflammatory drugs. The animals have not had contact with other animals in the zoo.
It is still being investigated how they became infected.
