Tropical Storm Isaias Swells Back to Hurricane Force

Tropical storm Isaias that ravaged the US state of Florida on Sunday is expected to regain strength as it pulls up along the US East Coast through the states of North Carolina and Georgia over the next few days.

President Donald Trump has declared a state of emergency for North Carolina.

Only when the storm comes over land does the wind decrease in strength, says the American National Hurricane Center (NHC).

For days, people have been warned about heavy wind gusts, floods and large amounts of rain in places where the centre of gravity of the storm passes. Wind speeds of up to 110 kilometres per hour were measured off the coast of Florida.

On Saturday, Isaias crossed the Bahamas, and the NHC scaled the hurricane to a tropical storm.

On Thursday, the storm caused damage in Puerto Rico, where trees were blown down, power lines were knocked down, and homes were flooded.

A 56-year-old woman on the island was killed when the car she was in was dragged into the water. In the Dominican Republic, two people died from severe weather.
