Musk Withdraws Takeover Bid if OpenAI Maintains Original Mission

Billionaire Elon Musk will withdraw his bid of 97.4 billion dollars to take over the non-profit organization behind OpenAI if the board agrees to maintain the original mission, Musk’s lawyers report in a court document.

In doing so, they are responding to criticism from the lawyers of OpenAI, the company behind chatbot ChatGPT.

Musk previously accused OpenAI of abandoning its original mission to serve humanity with open and secure AI and now focusing entirely on profit maximization. Altman wants to turn OpenAI into a commercial company and wants to invest hundreds of billions to do so.

Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have long been at odds over their different visions for the direction of OpenAI, of which Musk is one of the founders. The bid from a Musk-led consortium on Monday has further increased tensions between them, with Altman saying OpenAI is not for sale, and certainly not to Musk.
