EU Ambassadors Agree on Sanctions Against Belarus

EU ambassadors agreed in Brussels on sanctions against senior officials and military personnel in Belarus. The French ambassador tweeted this and was confirmed by several diplomatic sources in Brussels.

The EU considers the country bordering Ukraine and Russia to be a co-aggressor in Russia’s war against Ukraine.

On Monday, Minister Wopke Hoekstra (Foreign Affairs) said in the House of Representatives during the Ukraine debate that the Netherlands wants the sanctions announced for Russia to also apply to Belarus. This is because president Alexander Lukashenko opened his territory, among other things, so that Russian soldiers could advance to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

The British government has already imposed sanctions on four senior defence officials, including the chief of general staff, on Tuesday. Two military enterprises are also being attacked by the British.

The Belarusian government has been faced with EU sanctions for some time because, according to Brussels, the 2020 presidential election was unfair, and opponents are being imprisoned en masse.
