Apple’s First Mixed Reality Headset Would Focus on Gaming, Media and Communication

A persistent rumour has it that Apple is currently putting the finishing touches on its first mixed reality headset. According to the American news agency Bloomberg, the device will primarily be intended for games, media consumption and communication.

The headset from Apple would use both AR (added reality) and VR, which turns the gadget into so-called mixed reality glasses. Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who specializes in Apple, explains what users can expect from the device in his latest Power On newsletter. Gurman has been right in the past regarding future Apple products.

“Gaming will undoubtedly be one of the spearheads of the headset, given the presence of multiple processors, a fan, extremely high-resolution screens and Apple’s own App Store (which offers an extensive game assortment, ed.)” says Gurman. He thinks Apple will position the device as the dream device for game developers. “In addition, I expect Apple to work with media partners to create content that can be viewed in VR. In terms of communication, you can look forward to VR FaceTime-like experiences that will usher in the new zoom.’

Gradually, more details emerge about Apple’s upcoming headset. The main rumours – because they still are – include two main processors, a duo of microLED 4K screens, eye-tracking and WiFi 6E connectivity. Filed patent applications must also show that the headset offers a ‘see-through function’. It can be concluded that AR, or augmented reality, is also supported in addition to VR.

Insiders expect the gadget to enter production in mid-2022 and be available around next year’s holidays.
