EU Ministers: Educate Clergy According to European Values

Imams and another clergy must from now on be trained according to European standards and values, according to the member states of the European Union.

They prefer to see that training take place within the EU and not outside it.

The responsible ministers of the EU countries discussed the fight against terrorism on Friday afternoon, which has been drawing attention again since the recent attacks in France and Austria.

EU president Charles Michel already made a plea for a European imam training on Monday.

For example, he wants to counter the influence of conservative and radical variants of Islam from Saudi Arabia, for instance, on European Muslims.

“We must promote that religious education and training – preferably within the EU – are consistent with European fundamental rights and values,” said Justice Minister Ferd Grapperhaus and his colleagues unanimously after their consultations.
