New York Stocks Closed for Memorial Day

The New York stock exchanges are closed on Monday for Memorial Day celebrations. On that day, fallen American soldiers are commemorated. Trading on Wall Street will resume on Tuesday.

On Friday, the main indicators in New York showed small pluses. The leading Dow Jones index closed 0.2 percent higher at 34,529.45 points. The broad-based S&P 500 climbed 0.1 percent to 4204.11 points, and technology indicator Nasdaq also rose 0.1 percent to 13,748.74 points.

The US stock markets showed mixed performances in May. The Dow gained 1.9 percent last month, and the S&P 500 gained half a percent. The Nasdaq fell 1.5 percent on account of losses among tech companies on concerns about rising inflation and a faster rate hike by the Federal Reserve.

Investors in New York this week are paying attention, among other things, to the American jobs report that will be released on Friday. On Wednesday, payslip processor ADP will already provide figures on employment in the corporate sector in the United States.

In addition, new data is reported from market researcher Markit on economic activity in May and weekly unemployment claims in the US.

This week’s quarterly figures will receive results from online meeting service Zoom Video Communications, chip company Broadcom and sportswear manufacturer Lululemon Athletica.
