A remarkable case in America: an agent of the New York Police Department is suspected of espionage for the Chinese government.
The agent in question, an American citizen of Tibetan descent, is said to have spied the Tibetan community in New York and transferred their activities to Beijing.
The agent, Baimadajie Angwang, was born in the Tibet region of China and emigrated to the United States at the age of 18. He is said to have been in contact with the Chinese consulate in New York since 2018.
According to charges against him, Angwang passed on information about the Tibetan community in New York, in particular the Tibetans who advocated independence for Tibet from China.
Angwang came to the United States at the age of eighteen to apply for asylum there. He claims to have been tortured in China because of his Tibetan origin. The FBI now believes that story is made up.
A thorough investigation now shows that his father served in the Chinese People’s Army, and both his parents are associates of the communist party.
