On Wednesday, former US President Donald Trump called on Republicans to vote for Kevin McCarthy.
However, he still did not get enough votes behind him on Tuesday after three rounds and is therefore not yet allowed to call himself the new speaker of the House of Representatives.
“It is now time for our great Republicans in the House to vote for Kevin,” Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social. It is a rare public statement of support.
Despite a slim Republican majority, McCarthy failed to win as a speaker on Tuesday, as several far-right Trump supporters labelled his candidacy as too centrist. Voting will resume on Wednesday at 12:00.
