More than a thousand bodies of civilians have been recovered in and around the Ukrainian capital Kyiv in recent weeks.
UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, said Thursday. In many cases, war crimes are likely involved, she said.
“The number of murders, including possible summary executions north of Kyiv, is shocking,” Bachelet said in a video link speech to the UN Human Rights Commission headquarters in Geneva.
This committee will decide on Thursday whether to form a team that will officially investigate the events in Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions in February and March.
Russia has denied attacking civilians and has been speaking of a “special military operation” since the February 24 raid to disarm Ukraine and rid it of anti-Russian nationalism. However, Ukraine itself and the West speak of an aggressive war without cause.
